Hill Country, chocolate chip cookie

30 W. 26th St, NY, NY 10010

Rating: A - Excellent
Visit #: 5
In brief: To the super nice guy manning the cashier at Hill Country today who offered us a cookie on the house next time we showed up: We'll be back! You can count on a return trip for one of our favorite neighborhood chocolate chip cookies. 03-12 chocolate chip cookie

homemade chocolate chip cookies

Rating: A - Excellent
Visit #: 2
In brief: The last time I made chocolate chip cookies from the Tate's recipe I don't think I used salted butter. I probably used whatever butter was in the fridge. This time I happened to have salted butter and what a difference it made! Even though the recipe already calls for salt, that little extra amount catapults the cookies into another realm of deliciousness. I always make half a batch with chocolate chips and one without.

funfetti cookies

Rating: B - Above Average
Visit #: 1
In brief: I should have put less sugar so they wouldn't turn out so sweet, but otherwise the funfetti style cookies are a nice afternoon treat. The accidental extra salt probably helped offset the sweetness.

Le Pain Quotidien

931 Broadway, NY, NY 10010

Rating: F - Fail
Visit #: 6
Not for the first time, a cookie judged by its slightly burnt, deeply browned appearance completely lets us down. In fact this cookie so gravely failed us that we couldn't even have more than a bite or two. It's hard to describe what precisely offends, but there was no flavor to the cookie, it was like eating a well textured piece of baked sugar and flour. Bleh. 01-22 chocolate chip cookie

Hill Country

30 W. 26th St, NY, NY 10010

Rating: A - Excellent
Visit #: 5
In brief: Even though you have to go through the hostess, into the dining hall and back around out to the cashier and even though the chocolate cookie looked too doughy, it was totally and absolutely worth it. This cookie is all sorts of stellar awesomeness. Worth whatever you have to do to get one. 01-22 chocolate chip cookie

Homemade chocolate chip cookies

The problem with baking at home is I always forget how much butter is needed. The 5-year old wanted to make chocolate chip cookies but I only had enough butter for a half batch. Since we used the Tate's recipe, even half a batch was plenty to feel happily satiated at snack time this weekend.

Pret a Manger

655 6th Ave, NY, NY 10011

Rating: A - Excellent
Taste #: 6
In brief: The harvest cookie at Pret hits the spot for an afternoon pick me up. It's more snack than dessert, but all that chewy goodness goes down easily. 09-08 harvest cookie

Cafe Serai

150 W. 17th St, NY, NY 10011

Rating: B - Above Average
Taste #: 1
In brief: Though too sweet and too full of milky chocolate chips, the chocolate chip cookie at Cafe Serai was strangely compelling. In a Mrs. Field's kind of way. But better.

Once Upon a Tart, RIP

135 Sullivan St, NY, NY 10012

Rating: 1 - Wonderful
Visit #: The last
In brief: Change happens to everyone and everything and even neighborhood institutions like Once Upon a Tart are not immune to rising rents.
08-25 cookiebits
We stopped by this weekend, me and my sister, to have one last roast pork loin sandwich from Once Upon a Tart on its last day in Soho or elsewhere. The mood was melancholy but sweet. I picked up a handful of cookies and have been slowly munching on nostalgia these past couple of days.

Tate's Bake Shop

Rating: A- Excellent
Taste #: countless
In brief: We're sorry Tate's, for having waited so long to pick up a bag of your always perfect cookies. We did today, and the instant I bit into the chocolate chip walnut, I smiled in sheer pleasure at the deliciousness that is a Tate's cookie.

Zaro's Bakery

920 Broadway, NY, NY 10010

Rating: B - Above Average
Taste #: 2
In brief: A couple months ago, by chance, we had a chocolate chip cookie from Zaro's, not a place we normally go. But this chocolate chip cookie! So perfectly American, classic in it's overloaded chocolate chips, verging on too sweet but somehow nice flavors altogether. Somehow it's compelling.

sugar cookies

Rating: C - Average
Taste #: 1
In brief: I tried a "fast and easy" sugar cookie recipe this weekend when the crepe place was closed and we needed our afternoon snack in a snap. These turned out less awful than I thought they would, but I don't intend to skip the 2-hour refrigeration again.

Chocolate chip cookies of unknown provenance make me nervous but M. had already tried the chocolate chip cookies at Ashby's and I have to agree with her, better than the peanut butter ones.

In brief: Less a cookie, Donut Pub's black and white is more a cake with donut frosting on top. So that makes it quite good. 05-01 black & white cookie

homemade Toll House cookies

Rating: A - Excellent
Taste #: 1
In brief: The walnuts make a huge difference and I love the lumpy shapes. The brown sugar must really contribute to the overall taste, because I don't remember the Toll House cookies of my youth quite as tasty. These are pretty nice! In short, I am a fan and M.'s hubby can bake these anytime he desires for our office consumption.
