4:00pm griddle hot cakes

05-02 hot cakes
I'm not even sure what these are called, but I do know that for $1 you get a small bag of 20 steaming hot, fresh off the griddle, little hot cakes. They're like little fluffy bites of heaven. I don't know if there are regular spots but I found these today on the south side of Grand between Chrystie and Bowery, opposite the fancy cream-cake machine.

These remind me of cut up Hong Kong pancakes. Which I still need to get around to blogging about so you can see.

BTW, congrats! Big week for both of you. Blogs of Note and Miki as Apartment Therapy small cool judge. If I had known, I would have entered my little bungalow. Hmm. Not sure if visual food counts as bribery. ;)

Yes, they ARE so simple and tasty little cakes! I used to call it "Hong Kong cake". I left NYC almost 4 years ago, after living there for 14 years. There used to be a permanent stand of this cake on a tiny little street, right off the Mott, I believe......there was a small Thai grocery store on that street as well....I wonder if they are still there. Anyway, I found your Blog a few weeks ago. I'm so obsessed of your page. I visit there day and night, twice a day. So fun to see the pix and short comment. I see lots of places I used to go while I lived there. I'm a food crazy like you are. I miss eating all the great food from all over the world in NYC. Please keep posting. Miss Lumilumi

I'm pretty sure these are called hot puppies cause they were thrown to dogs using the leftover cornmeal.

Look up aebelskivers. (also ebelskivers). These are Danish breakfast pancakes made with a buttermilk and beaten eggwhite batter in an ebelskiver pan that looks like a fry pan with half-round depressions.

These might not be what you had, but they have the same appearance and they are delicious! (Traditionally, there's a bit of apple or applesauce in the center, but I can't seem to make that happen.) And traditionally, we eat them with maple syrup. :-)
