Shanghai Cafe, with Hong

100 Mott St, NY, NY 10013

Rating: 1 - Wonderful

In brief: Rarely has the lunch trifecta of soup dumplings, sauteed string beans and rice cakes with shredded pork and preserved cabbage ever disappointed us. Maybe once the string beans were a little soft.
10-09 Shanghai Cafe Deluxe
We auditioned a new dish for our lunch trifecta at Shanghai Cafe today - rice balls with pork in broth. As Serious Eats reports, they are serious comfort food. The broth was especially perfect in that chicken soup or congee way. I don't know if it can ever replace our usual dishes, but definitely something to add on when your group gets larger. Otherwise we spent the remainder of lunch vastly amusing ourselves with the blatant racial tea profiling. Almost universally Asians get served hot tea, everyone else Western and Caucasian gets ice water. Mixed couples tended to get hot tea. We always feel slightly validated as good and proper Asians when we too get hot tea without asking.

Ha that is too funny. As a white woman dating a Chinese man for over four years, I can tell you that I had also never seen what I call "the secret Chinese menu" til I had been with him. Who knew that there was so much better stuff than ginger beef and sweet and sour pork?:). We went out for dinner the other night and there was a whole table of white men and I didn't see them get offered the menu we got. We feasted on mussels in black bean sauce and tofu and fish over rice (my personal favourite).
