4:44pm mujigae ddeuk

02-25 ddeuk
Mujigae ddeuk or rainbow rice cake is one of those desserts I crave from time to time. There's just something about the texture of rice cakes that I enjoy them in almost every form available. The thing I like about ddeuk is the slightly bread-y texture; it feels like you are eating steamed bread enriched with rice flour. And it's also barely sweet. I love carbs, especially when it looks as happy as this.

Mmmmm special place in my heart for ddeok :)

Most ddeok completely lacks the bready texture of rainbow ddeok, though. More typical is a sticky, chewy texture, like jeolpyeon (flat, parallelogram-shaped, purchasable in white and green (ssuk, an herb)) or sool ddeok (made with... um... soju maybe... texture is a little bouncier). Also try songpyeon (football-shaped or spherical, with sweet fillings), injeolmi (very soft ddeok coated in mung bean or red bean powder), and the kinds filled with beans and chestnuts and so on :)

hi lunch studio,
you've finally posted about one of my favorite comfort foods…the mouth feel is what makes this ddeok. i like the plain white ones, too. the sweetness is barely discernible so i'd think most people would be like, 'what is this??' but it's so addictive!

So glad to hear from fellow ddeok (dduk) lovers! I do love the white ones with red beans, I shall try the chestnut next time. I love all the other rice cakes with the bean powder and red bean filled etc., very similar/identical to japanese sweets - all so good!
